Current Goodreads Rating:
This is the best book I've read in a while. I had no idea. This is my second Ruth Ware book, The Woman in Cabin 10 being my first, and this one far exceeding that one. I was not excepting the turn of events that took place. I went almost the entire book looking in the shadows and waiting for some ax murderer to spring out of the woods chasing these women down, but when the ball dropped it landed me concussed. In a Dark, Dark Wood was brilliant and clever. The entire story was entertaining, the turmoil between awkward strangers gathered for the shenanigans of a bachelorette party all lead by a best friend who is obsessively defensive of her friend. I still can't believe I never thought for a second this book was going to play out the way it did. I couldn't read fast enough trying to lap it up. All the motives that came out when I still had whiplash from the turn of events and never realizing I should have been looking for motives! Excellent read and one of my favorite this year. It turned from thrilling and entertaining, to downright juicy and personal!
“People don’t change,” Nina said bitterly. “They just get more punctilious about hiding their true selves.”
“It was growing dark, and somehow the shadows made it feel as if all the trees had taken a collective step towards the house, edging in to shut out the sky.”
“I always thought that being self-sufficient was a strength, but now I realize it’s a kind of weakness, too.”
