A Bookish Summer Blog Hop: Childhood Favorites

Today's Topic:

What are your favorite books from your childhood?

I remember two series in particular that I’ve been considering trying to start collecting again. It would be just in case I decide to have kids one day because I would love to read these to them and get to relive the adventure the books provided me.

I enjoyed The Boxcar Children, that now has 150 books in its series and in April 2014 even released an animated movie (which I’m now going to have to look up myself). The series is aimed at readers in grades 2–6 and is about four orphaned children who become amateur sleuths, and the subsequent series involves the children solving various mysteries and occasionally traveling to other locations as they do so. They stumble across a mystery no matter where they are, whether on vacation or in their own backyard.

The second series I loved was Hank the Cowdog, this has 70 books which sounds like nothing compared to the Boxcar Children. The series is aimed at readers in grades 3–5 and was about Hank, the cowdog (who would have guessed), who has a superiority complex which causes him to have an inflated sense of his own intelligence, strength, courage and attractiveness. As a result of this, Hank frequently finds himself in sticky situations, usually of his own creation. Much of the humor of the series comes from Hank as narrator shamelessly attempting to make himself seem more competent with hindsight than he really was, but the reader is rarely fooled.

One of my all-time favorite series growing up was The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. That series was basically my introduction to fantasy, and I read every book cover-to-cover, almost to the point of memorization. I loved the camaraderie of the siblings, and the way the world worked, how the most mundane things could be a portal to this amazing world, and the adventures that were both simple and profound all at once.

I collected so many series when I was younger. I remember having hundreds of Garfield books. I loved that cat ;)

Judy Blume was responsible for a large part of my reading material. Are You There God?, It’s Me Margaret, Super Fudge, Tiger Eyes… I read them all.

Then of course there was the Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High series. I had so many of each of these series.

One of my favorite books growing up was Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke! I read it for the first time in grade school and immediately fell in love with the characters, especially Twigleg, a brave little homunculus who defects from his evil master and helps the good guys! His friendship with the main character was ridiculously sweet, and it stuck in my mind for so long that I bought my own copy while I was in high school. I still leaf through it from time to time.

My favorite series to read as a kid was the Saddle Club by Bonnie Bryant. It's about 3 horse crazy girls who have a bunch of adventures together. It is about friendships, growing up, and a love of horses.

I love the picture book Hide and Sneak by Michael Kusugak. I recently wrote a short story inspired by it.

Rhoald Dahl is perhaps my favourite children’s author, with Maurice Sendak, Shel Siverstien, and Robert Munsch all holding dear places in my heart. I can honestly say that the best part of being a parent is being able to share all these wonderful stories with my own children.

I still have the copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that I read multiple times as a kid. I used to carry that book around everywhere. It’s now safely stored as a very happy memory of my childhood.
